Zach Bennett, Hockey Fan, Urges Family to Move to Follow Team

Filed under:

The Albany River Rats are no more. The Carolina Hurricanes' primary American Hockey League affiliate moved to Charlotte and became the Checkers.

When the River Rats left, there were a lot of fans who were left without a local team. One of them was Zach Bennett, an 11-year-old boy. Bennett's story is a heartbreaking one. Zach lost both his legs to a degenerative disease called neurofibromatosis, in which soft-tissue tumors form on nerves. It's a non-fatal disease.

The amputations are part of some 20-plus surgeries he's had so far.

The family recently visited the team's new home in Charlotte, giving Zach a chance to hang out with his favorite team once again.

CNN did a story on Zach, and noted that the family is going to move to Charlotte, once their home in Albany sells. It moves Zach closer to specialists who can help treat his disease, as well as getting him back with his beloved Checkers.
