Team Lidstrom Edges Team Staal at NHL All-Star Game

Filed under:

RALEIGH, N.C. -- No lead -- even a four-goal advantage -- was safe at Sunday's NHL All-Star Game, an exhibition that was again short on defense and long on unabated chances on net.

But the most notable stats came from the blue line and goal crease of Team Lidstrom, which earned a 11-10 victory at RBC Center. Nick Lidstrom, the captain of the Detroit Red Wings who selected his squad in a first-of-its-kind draft earlier in the weekend, was a plus-7 and Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas became the first netminder in the history of the exhibition to record three consecutive wins.

"It can go either way," said Lidstrom, who had an assist and two blocked shots. "You can be plus-7 or minus-7. It's that easy."

His defensive partner, Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators, was a plus-6 and recorded a game-high four assists. Despite those enviable numbers, and two-goal games by Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar (Team Lidstrom), Dallas' Loui Eriksson (Team Staal) Philadelphia's Daniel Briere (Team Staal), Carolina's Eric Staal (Team Staal) and Pittsburgh's Kris Letang (Team Staal), the game's MVP award went to Patrick Sharp.

The Chicago Blackhawks forward, who was not even on the All-Star ballot, had a goal and two assists in the losing effort.

"I thought we won the game," said Sharp, who won a Honda as part of the award, which was voted on by the media and fans. "It's a game where there's lots of offense. There's some pretty plays lots of nice goals on both sides, and I'm honored to win the trophy."

The two teams -- one led by Lidstrom and the other by hometown favorite Eric Staal -- sent 91 shots on net. No penalty minutes were served and zero hits were recorded.

Golf Point/Counterpoint: 2011 Season Observings

Filed under:

Lee WestwoodFanHouse Golf Writer Mick Elliott runs through a point/counterpoint on the early weeks of the 2011 PGA season:

Fact: World No. 1 Lee Westwood (pictured) heads the field this week at Abu Dhabi, joined by Graeme McDowell, Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington, Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy.

Observation: Not to be outdone, the PGA Tour's Bob Hope Classic, with its pro-am format, has Alice Cooper, Craig T. Nelson, Sterling Sharpe and a Rush Limbaugh listener.

Fact: Of the 26 rookies who made their season debut last week at Sony, only five survived the cut with the best finish belonging to Chris Kirk, a former Ben Hogan Award winner at Georgia (T30).

Observation: Do you wonder if the Bulldogs elected Kirk team captain?

Five Iowa Players Released From Hospital

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz announced Friday that five of the 13 players hospitalized with a muscular disorder this week have been released. He anticipates the remaining players being discharged "in the days ahead."

On Tuesday, the players were taken in after suffering exertional rhabdomyolysis, a common consequence of intense strength training that can damage cells and cause kidney problems. Ferentz said he's been in close contact with players and their families since Tuesday.

"The health and well-being of each student-athlete in our football program is paramount. I will work with all of the individuals and groups that contribute to the welfare of our student-athletes to understand what led to this occurrence in order to make certain it does not happen again," Ferentz said.

The university has begun an investigation into the hospitalizations involving independent experts.

"Our entire staff shares the concern expressed by University of Iowa President Sally Mason and President David Miles of the Iowa Board of Regents and the State of Iowa, for the well-being and continued recovery of every student-athlete treated at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics," Ferentz said.

Alexander Semin Signs Another One-Year Deal with Capitals

For the second straight year, Alexander Semin has signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals. Give credit to the high-scoring wing for having the confidence in his ability to forego the safety cushion of a longer-term deal.

"Sometimes it's the player's preference," Capitals general manager George McPhee said on a media conference call on Thursday. "Alex was comfortable with a one-year deal. We were open to one, two and three-year deals. They said a one-year deal would be fine, and we said okay."

Despite being a point-a-game player for the last three years while offensive stars are hard to come by, the 26-year old Semin passed on becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and signed for $6.7 million.

Texas Strikes $300 Million Deal for Longhorn TV Network

by FanHouse Staff

Everything is bigger in Texas, including television licensing deals.

The University of Texas and ESPN reached a 20-year, $300-million agreement for a 24-hour network to carry Texas athletic events as well as some campus-related programming, the school announced Wednesday.

"This is an extremely exciting new venture for our university," University of Texas president William Powers said in a statement. "With our partners, we are now able to increase the exposure of our outstanding athletics programs and our first-class academic and cultural communities. This agreement provides significant new resources to enhance faculty and academic support."

Texas will take home $247.5 million of the agreement, according to the report, an average of $12.4 million per year, though that number could go up depending upon performance of the network. The network will not supplant any of the school's current television deals through the Big 12, though it will broadcast at least one football game and eight men's basketball games, in addition to olympic sports.

The revenue will be in addition to the $14-15 million the school is currently set to receive this year as part of the Big 12's television agreements, which means Texas' television revenue should approach $30 million per year.

ESPN will launch, develop and manage the channel.

"This network is a testament to the school's remarkable, tradition-rich success and widespread, devoted fan base," ESPN president George Bodenheimer said in a statement.

The network will begin broadcasting in September.

Omar Salgado Rides Change of Heart to Top of MLS SuperDraft

mls draft superdraft mls omar salgadoBALTIMORE -- With the first pick of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, and the first pick in franchise history, the Vancouver Whitecaps selected a player who may not even be eligible to play for them until September.

While the U.S. has enjoyed several important victories over Mexico on the field in recent years, last summer ago it scored one off it.

Omar Salgado, then a 16-year-old star of the future with Chivas de Guadalajara and a veteran of Mexico's junior national team program, decided to switch his international allegiance to the U.S.

Born in El Paso to Mexican parents, the forward was eligible to represent both countries.

Mike Holmgren Knows What It Means to Win in Green Bay

CLEVELAND -- There is no other city in the country with a team like the Green Bay Packers, and there is no other city with a relationship with its team like Green Bay.

Mike Holmgren understood, but he really understood deeply when he worked as Packers coach from 1992-98.

"It hits you from the first step when you get off the airplane," Holmgren said this week from Cleveland, where he is now president of the Cleveland Browns. "You drive down Lombardi Avenue to the facility. You see the pictures of Bart Starr and Jerry Kramer and Paul Hornung.

"If you know football at all, and I like football ... I was kind of a historian ... you can't help it but feel it. You just can't help it."

Starry Night at MSG Fields Unlikely Hero

NEW YORK -- For the past decade, Madison Square Garden and more specifically the NBA team that called it home -- the New York Knicks -- was the rotten core of Big Apple sports.

This season, things are different. Thanks to Amar'e Stoudemire, the Knicks' first All-Star starter since 1997, the apple is polished and shiny and red and juicy. On Thursday, everyone wanted to take a bite.

TNT, back for the first time at the Garden in five years, went all out. They brought "Inside the NBA" up from Atlanta and managed to sneak Marv Albert past the Dolans and into the building. They announced the All-Star starters and three of the five Eastern Conference starters happened to be in the building.

The glitterati such as "The Donald," "The King of All Media," Kanye West, Spike Lee, Woody Allen, Alicia Keys and Tracy Morgan and his very dirty mind more than likely would have shown up to see LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the Heat even if the Knicks were playing willing patsies to marauding opponents as they had in the past.

The stars had come to see stars, and for a while, they got what they came for.

Tony Stewart Reportedly Detained in Australia

NASCAR driver and team owner Tony Stewart has been detained for questioning in Australia, according to a report.

Speedcafe reports Stewart was allegedly involved in a physical altercation with Sydney Speedway co-owner Brett Morris.

The report says Stewart was upset about track conditions after hot laps, and he started exchanging words with Morris. While Stewart was held for questioning, there is no confirmation on whether he will face any charges.

Saturday evening, Stewart public relations representative Mike Arning told FanHouse in an email, "We're attempting to gather whatever information we can get our hands on in an effort to separate fact from fiction.

"However, we can say that Tony Stewart is not being held anywhere and is resting in his hotel in Australia. While we have spoken with him, he's still half-a-world a way, so figuring out what did or didn't happen is going to take some time."

After racing in Australia during the month of January, Stewart was scheduled to return to the U.S. on Saturday. No word on how his detainment will affect his plans.

Stewart is about to enter his 13th season of NASCAR competition.

Phil Simms, Jim Nantz Respond to Charges of Patriots Bias

by Milton Kent

Few things draw the ire of network announcers more than allegations that they favor one team or player over another or that they pull punches. That, and cutting off their clothing and hair-care allowances.

So, it shouldn't have come as a surprise that Jim Nantz and Phil Simms, CBS' No.1 NFL announce team, were all too happy to refute allegations that they took a little off their respective fastballs recently and made too nice with the New England Patriots during last Sunday's telecast.

"That's always the case, especially with fans," said Simms Thursday during a conference call to promote CBS' coverage of Sunday's AFC championship game between Pittsburgh and the New York Jets. "I walk out of the booth almost every week (and hear), 'Aw, you don't say enough good things about us.' "

Simms added, in a sarcastic tone, "That's OK. You're right. I want to show favoritism and get fired."

The piece that triggered the response was written by veteran media critic Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News, who contended Monday that Simms had failed to take Patriots coach Bill Belichick to task for strategic gaffes he might have made during Sunday's divisional playoff loss to the Jets.

US Golf Star Power Dwindling

Filed under:

Nowhere among the world's top two ranked golfers will you find Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk or any other American.

U.S. golf supremacy, once as dependable as the American dollar, well, still is. While the PGA Tour's Bob Hope Classic was playing out Sunday as a final-round battle between everybody's favorites, Jhonattan Vegas and Gary Woodland, far across the world Germany's Martin Kaymer was winning the Abu Dhabi Championship and vaulting into the world No. 2 spot behind England's Lee Westwood ahead of Woods.

Kaymer, the 26-year-old who made last year's PGA Championship his first major title, shot a 6-under-par 66 to finish 24 under and eight shots clean of Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy. Retief Goosen and Graeme McDowell were another two shots back in third.

Kaymer's winning score and victory margin were the best in tournament history.

Making those facts particularly impressive is the Abu Dhabi field featured all four reigning major champions in addition to
Westwood, Mickelson and a total of seven of the world's top 12.

Bob Hope Classic: The Once Must-Play Tournament Lacks Appeal

And in other golf action this week, the PGA Tour will be in LaQuinta, Calif., for the 52nd playing of the Bob Hope Classic.

It just doesn't seem fair, but that's where the once-proud event finds itself: in only slightly better health than its namesake. When the five-round, 90-hole pro-am event begins Wednesday, it will be playing second fiddle to the European Tour's Abu Dhabi Championship, the week's big-boy gathering that will draw six of the world's top 10 players, and 12 of the top 25, including world No. 1 Lee Westwood and American favorite Phil Mickelson.

The Hope, meanwhile, has six of the top 50 (Matt Kuchar, Tim Clark, Bubba Watson, Bo Van Pelt, Ryan Moore and Stewart Cink). Kuchar, at 13th, is the highest-ranked player and the only player from the top 25. There was a time that the Hope was a must-play during the West Coast Swing. But players simply do not like five rounds that (because of amateur partners) last six hours in historically foul weather.

Phil Mickelson Stabilizes on, Off Course

Filed under:

SAN DIEGO -- After 19 PGA Tour seasons, 46 professional victories, four major championships, more than $60 million in career earnings and a public image that can pull more heart stings than Hallmark, Phil Mickelson should be a whole lot easier to figure.

But then he wouldn't be Phil.

Few -- in any -- people in golf have ever done unpredictability bigger and better than Mickelson. Start with the fact that he's a natural right-hander who plays golf lefty.

Over the years, Mickelson has lost events he should have won, and won others in which he probably should not have even been in contention. He has been heroic, steady and good. He has been his own worst enemy. He has been lampooned for talking too much about things he should not and applauded for insight and opinions on important issues inside the game. He has gambled and won, gambled and lost.

Andy Reid Should Take Keen Notice of Suddenly Available Jeff Fisher

How lucky would the Eagles be if Jeff Fisher just landed in their laps?

Still without a defensive coordinator two weeks after firing Sean McDermott and having seen both top in-house candidate Dick Jauron and the only coach to interview for the position, Dennis Allen, both take coordinator jobs elsewhere, Philadelphia seemed to be waiting to hire a position coach from one of the two Super Bowl teams. Of those men, only Green Bay defensive line coach Mike Trgovac has ever been an NFL coordinator.

But now former Titans coach Fisher is available in the wake of his stunning ouster in Tennessee on Thursday more than 16 years after he was hired and three weeks after he won a power struggle with since-released/troubled quarterback Vince Young and was told he was would be back In the interim. Fisher's longtime defensive line coach Jim Washburn left for the Eagles and defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil was fired.

Not only does Fisher's firing make Philadelphia's Andy Reid -- hired in 1999 -- the league's senior coach, but now the 52-year-old is clearly the top former coordinator on the market. Ironically, Fisher's first job as a coordinator was with the Eagles under Buddy Ryan in 1990 when he was just 30. In his second season, Philadelphia led the NFL in interceptions and sacks. The next season, the Eagles led the league in rushing defense and was second in sacks.

After a 5-2 start in 2010, Tennessee finished 6-10. This after winning eight of its final 10 games following an 0-6 start in 2009. The Titans went 13-3 in 2008 but lost their playoff opener at home to Baltimore. So Fisher, whose Titans came within a yard of forcing overtime in Super Bowl XXXIV against St. Louis 11 years ago, departed having not won a playoff game during his final seven seasons.

Fisher, who was 142-120 with the Houston/Tennessee franchise, is 20th all-time in victories. His 16-plus seasons with the franchise were more than anyone has been a head coach except Hall of Famers George Halas, Tom Landry, Don Shula, Chuck Noll, Curly Lambeau and Bud Grant.

Sony Open Preview: Test for the New Guys

Steve StrickerNow, everybody gets to play.

The Sony Open in Hawaii, the PGA Tour's first full-field event, tees off Thursday at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. After last week's winners-only Tournament of Champions got the season started, now everybody gets to play -- well, at least a field of 144.

The field has attracted only Steve Stricker (No. 6) and Jim Furyk (No. 7) from the World Golf Ranking's top 10, but has 22 of the 34 players who competed last week in Kapalua, including winner Jonathan Byrd and defending tournament champ Ryan Palmer.

There's also Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Davis Love and Zach Johnson, giving the field more than a fair share of glamor names.

The week is also the annual coming-out party for the season's rookie class. Twenty-six of this year's 35 rookies will make their debut , 15 of them age 25 or younger.

Jamie Lovemark, 22, will get much of the fresh-face attention. Lovemark, out of the University of Southern Cal, was the youngest-ever winner of the Nationwide Tour Player of the Year last season. He won once and finished runner-up three times to surpass Stewart Cink (1996) and Nick Flanagan (1997), who both turned 23 the year they won the award.

Derrick Rose Recovering From Stomach Ulcers

Derrick RoseDEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Derrick Rose plans to cut back on the spices.

The Bulls' star point guard is recovering from stomach ulcers he believes his diet caused and hopes to play when Chicago hosts the Orlando Magic on Friday.

Rose said his energy is "kind of low. But I should be all right."

He said he started experiencing heartburn on Monday and still is having difficulty eating, drinking and swallowing. He initially thought he had stomach flu, but doctors at Rush University Medical Center found two ulcers on Wednesday.

Rose said they're not sure what caused the problem. But he blamed it on spicy food, saying, "That's the thing I'm going with."

He has also been bothered lately by an aching back, so a three-day break in the schedule came at a good time.

Meanwhile, center Joakim Noah was looking forward to having the cast on his right hand taken off on Monday. He had a pin in his thumb removed earlier in the week.

"I just want to come back as soon as possible," said Noah, who has been sidelined since mid-December with a torn ligament. "As soon as my hand is healthy, I want to be back regardless of what game it is."

Also on Thursday, the Bulls assigned forward James Johnson to the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League.

Craig Conroy Likely Will Retire

Filed under:

CALGARY -- Craig Conroy didn't end the speculation Thursday, but he did make his intent pretty clear.

"I will be honest, I am leaning toward retirement and right now that's where I'm headed,'' explained Conroy, the popular Calgary Flames center who cleared NHL waivers on Wednesday.

The loquacious 39-year-old, who addressed the media at the Scotiabank Saddledome, has one other option besides retirement and that would be to join the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League. But given his age, the Flames' brass knew that would be a tough sell.

"Would it kill me to go to the minors?'' Conroy asked. "Could I help them there? Those are the kind of questions I ask myself. I think I could help. But is it in my heart? I want to go down for the right reasons. You don't want to go down there and not be fully invested in what you're doing."

Conroy said he fully understood the Flames' decision to cut him loose.

Craig Conroy Clears Waivers, May Retire

CALGARY -- Craig Conroy's playing days with the Calgary Flames are over. Now it's up to him to determine whether he wants to hang up the skates for good.

The Calgary Flames center cleared waivers on Wednesday and has two options in front of him: report to the Flames' AHL farm team in Abbotsford, B.C. or retire.

"It's a tough day,'' admitted Calgary interim general manager Jay Feaster. "As I told Craig, I had the very unenviable task of having to deal with Dave Andreychuk at the end of his career. He was our captain in Tampa, we won a Stanley Cup together, and it was very, very difficult. As I told Connie today, I don't enjoy this; it's one of the worst parts of the job. But unfortunately there are tough decisions that have to be made.''

Armando Galarraga, Jim Joyce Working on Book Project Together

Has a colossal screw-up ever worked out better for two people than Jim Joyce's inability to tell the difference between being safe and out has worked out for Joyce and Armando Galarraga?

They were both lavished with praise throughout the rest of the 2010 season following the June 2 Imperfect Game for the way they handled a difficult situation with honesty (Joyce) and good humor (Galarraga). Now, like any good Americans placed in the spotlight, they have found a way to cash in on their 15 minutes of fame.

Joyce told the Detroit News that he and Galarraga are working on a book project about the aftermath of his decision to call Jason Donald safe on what would have been the 27th out of a perfect game. It's a great story, but it is one that has been told to death, leaving us to wonder just how much there is left to say about the incident.

Andy Gray Fired Over Sexist Comments

by FanHouse Newswire

LONDON (AP) -- One of British soccer's leading television commentators was fired Tuesday, a day after being taken off the air and temporarily suspended for making sexist remarks about a female match official.

Andy Gray, the face of Sky Sports' soccer coverage for the past two decades, was dismissed by the broadcaster after "new evidence of unacceptable and offensive behavior" that took place off-air last month.

The former Scotland striker and broadcast colleague Richard Keys had been reprimanded and removed from duty Monday for making derogatory comments about lineswoman Sian Massey, former referee Wendy Toms and West Ham executive Karren Brady.

"Andy Gray's contract has been terminated for unacceptable behavior," Sky Sports managing director Barney Francis said Tuesday. "We have no hesitation in taking this action after becoming aware of new information today."

Rocco Baldelli Retires at Age 29, Joins Rays' Front Office

Nearly three years after initially being diagnosed with a condition that sapped his strength and made it difficult for him to job, let alone expend the energy needed to play baseball, Rocco Baldelli officially announced his retirement Wednesday.

Baldelli told the St. Petersburg Times he knew immediately after his 2010 season ended -- when he was removed from the Rays' playoff roster after one game because of cramping in his legs -- that he wouldn't play again. Tampa Bay general manager Andrew Friedman advised him to give the decision some time, but Baldelli's new course is set. At age 29, he'll become a special adviser to the Rays, working in scouting and player development.

"I don't anticipate ever playing baseball again. I'm retired. The paperwork will be filed," Baldelli said. "And you know what. The only time I feel like it's good to retire is when you're happy to retire. And I'm happy."

As much of a struggle as it has been for Baldelli the last three seasons, the time since his diagnosis produced some of the most memorably moments of his playing career. After announcing his condition -- then labeled a mitochondrial disorder -- in March 2008, Baldelli worked to regain enough strength to join the Rays in the midst of their remarkable worst-to-first run. He came off the disabled list in August and served mostly as a bat off the bench during Tampa Bay's run to its first AL East title.

Alex Ovechkin: Diver?

There's no doubting the talents of Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin.

In fact, many in the hockey world believe he is the true face of the NHL, and not rival Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby.

"Crosby's a diver," fans cry out.

"Ovechkin plays the game the right way," the masses say.

Of course, that doesn't brandish Ovechkin a saint. It also doesn't mean he's never guilty of embellishment, as we saw Monday night when the Capitals played the New York Rangers.

Mark Wilson Survives Marathon Day to Win Sony Open

Filed under:

HONOLULU (AP) -- Mark Wilson made it through a 36-hole marathon Sunday without a bogey and held on for a two-shot victory in the Sony Open that will take him to the Masters for the first time.

Wilson shot a 5-under 65 in the morning to take a one-shot lead into the afternoon round. He stretched his lead to four shots at the turn, then had to hang on when Tim Clark and Steve Marino made late runs on different sides of Waialae.

Clark, who started the final round five shots behind, birdied three of his last four holes. He narrowly missed an eagle putt on the ninth hole and settled for a 64. Then came Marino with two late birdies and one incredible shot that at least gave him hope.

Two shots behind on the par-5 18th, with his feet in the bunker and his ball about chest-high on the side of a hill, Marino blasted a fairway metal from 234 yards away that landed on the front of the green and rolled 40 feet away. His eagle putt narrowly missed, giving him a 68.

Wilson made one last birdie he didn't need, giving him a 67 for his third career victory.

"It was nice to go right to the tee and not have to think about it," Wilson said of having only a few minutes before the third and fourth rounds. "I'm thankful it's over now."

Wilson, who finished at 16-under 264, played his final 40 holes without a bogey. That proved significant at a couple of points in the final round. He got into trouble on the eighth hole and was 150 yards out in the fairway playing his third shot, sure to lose some of his two-shot lead. But he stuffed it to 7 feet for par, then birdied the ninth to expand his lead to four.

Even bigger was his par on the 17th, even though Wilson didn't realize it.

AFC, NFC Championship Games Continue NFL's TV Ratings Boon

by Milton Kent

Filed under:

Jim NantzFor over a year, dating back to the BCS title game last January, television-audience levels for football games have spiraled upward -- and Sunday's NFL conference championship games continued the trend.

FOX reported that preliminary national ratings for the Green Bay-Chicago game were the highest ever for an NFC championship game airing in the early broadcast window, and the highest for an NFC title game that ended in regulation in 15 years.

Cut through all the qualifiers and you're left with this: The game was seen by nearly 52 million viewers and posted a 28.1 rating and 50 share of the national audience, a seven-percent rise in ratings, and 11-percent increase in audience from the AFC championship game between Indianapolis and the New York Jets.that aired at the same time last year

2010 Team Reviews: Penske Racing Perseveres as Lone Dodge Team

When Ryan Newman took the checkered flag in the 2008 Daytona 500, Penske Racing, his team at the time, got its first win in NASCAR's biggest race. Now team owner and motorsports mogul Roger Penske is in the market for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.

In that regard, Penske looked to be in terrible position before the start of last season after it became the lone team operating under the Dodge banner. Penske made the best of the situation and, in fact, may have gained from the undivided attention his operation received from Dodge.

The team's driving leader, former champion Kurt Busch, made a small push by securing another berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, while Brad Keselowski often struggled in his first season as a full-time driver in the Cup Series. The team's other driver, Sam Hornish Jr., may see his ride disappear in NASCAR's top division after yet another disappointing season in his three-year career.

11th - Kurt Busch [2 wins, 9 Top-5s, 17 Top-10s, 2 DNFs, 15.3 Avg. Finish]

It took just four races in the 2010 season for Kurt Busch to lay claim to his first win of the year, taking the checkered flag at Atlanta Motor Speedway in March. The win -- which featured Busch scraping the wall several times -- seemed to galvanize Busch's chance of being a real championship contender.

Nathan Gerbe Scores 2 Goals in 5 Seconds (Video)

First, the semi-important news: The New York Islanders defeated the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Saturday night, winning for just the third time in their past 10 games. And now, the most amazing thing to come out of that game, which is brought to us by Sabres forward Nathan Gerbe who accomplished an absolutely mind-blowing feat in the losing effort. With his team down, 4-0 late in the third period, Gerbe scored two goals in just five seconds, a span that almost seems impossible. And it still wasn't fast enough to be an NHL record.

The record for fastest set of goals is four seconds, which was accomplished by both Nels Stewart and Deron Quint.

Here's a look at how Gerbe pulled it off...

Maurice Jones-Drew: Cutler Tweet a Joke

(AP) -- Pro Bowl running back Maurice Jones-Drew says he never meant to take a shot at Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler or question his toughness.

The Jacksonville Jaguars star told The Associated Press on Monday that his tweet comparing Cutler to former Florida coach Urban Meyer was merely a joke -- one that clearly backfired.

Jones-Drew said he was rooting for Cutler and the Bears in Sunday's NFC championship game, and when Cutler left in the third quarter, Jones-Drew thought it was the perfect time to poke fun at the Gators.

"Hey I think the urban meyer rule is effect right now... When the going gets tough........QUIT," Jones-Drew posted on his Twitter page.

Jones-Drew has received death threats and plenty of ill will from Bears' fans. The Bears also defended Cutler, who was diagnosed with sprained MCL on Monday.

Jones-Drew was caught off guard by the backlash.

"I never attacked him, called him soft or a sore loser," Jones-Drew in a telephone interview Monday. "I never questioned his toughness. I think people took my joke out of context. I was taking at shot at Florida fans."

Terrible Towel Wipes Up Cheeseheads

Cheeseheads

In the long-awaited Super Bowl matchup between Cheeseheads and Terrible Towels, set aside your allegiance for a moment and ask yourself a simple question.

If you were inventing a merchandising gimmick, what do you think customers would prefer: An easily transportable item they could use to wave, wipe their seats, warm their hands, wash their cars and flag down help in case of emergency?

Or one that makes them look like the victim of a fraternity prank?

If you went with the first option, congratulations! You are a person of style, common sense and decency.

If you went with the second, you are from Sheboygan, Kenosha or Muskego and have a cholesterol level approximately 10 times higher than your IQ.

Unless you bow three times a day toward Vince Lombardi's grave, you would never voluntarily go out in public with a foam-rubber cheese wedge on your head. If Lombardi were still alive, even he would probably laugh at you. I realize them's fighting words for Packers fans, but I'm on your side here.

I like cheese. I'm all for expressing love for your team. I just hate to see you lose your dignity in the process.

And for your own protection, please don't mess with the Terrible Towel. Those who do tend to come back as cockroaches or Bengals fans in their next lives.

I can't explain such cosmic powers. I just know the Gods don't offer the same protection to cheddar-headed Packers fans. They simply can't be worried with defending the nobility of a woman wearing a cheese bra.
