Mike Pelfrey Mets' Opening Day Starter

With Johan Santana sidelined until future notice after surgery on his left shoulder, the Mets need someone to take the ball on Opening Day.

Enter Mike Pelfrey. Manager Terry Collins announced Wednesday that the right-hander would be on the mound come April 1 in Florida.

"He deserves it; he should have made the All-Star team last year," Collins said. "Mike Pelfrey is the No. 1 guy on this staff at this moment."

Pelfrey, the ninth overall pick of the 2005 draft, went 15-9 with a 3.66 ERA in 2010 while pitching a career-high 204 innings. He was a bit better in the first half than in the second half, but he was the most reliable starter other than Santana from April to October last season. Given how much the Mets would like to see him develop into a truly capable No. 2 this season, it makes a lot of sense to give him the confidence boost included with a start on the first day of the season.
