DC prepared for physical battle in Houston

WASHINGTON ? Visits to Houston have never been easy for D.C. United.

The team hasn?t won in five previous trips to Robertson Stadium, and heading into Friday evening?s Eastern Conference clash (8:30 pm ET; FOX Soccer, Official viewing party at Touchdown sports bar), DC are readying themselves for yet another tough matchup.

Miscues doom DC's run of participation in USOC

BOYDS, Md. ? For the first time since 2002, D.C. United won?t be playing in the US Open Cup.

Tuesday night?s 3-2 loss to the Revolution saw United knocked out in the qualifying phase of the competition, as a trio of defensive miscues went punished by New England. DC fell behind 3-0, and a furious second-half rally came up just short.

This despite controlling play for most of the first half and controlling possession. However, New England made their chances count, punishing three defensive lapses to come away with the win.

Ashton: DC don't know how to succeed right now

Heading into Friday night?s match at Houston, D.C. United had preached discipline and keeping tight at the back.

But the same defensive lapses that have plagued the team in losses this year were evident once again as the club conceded four goals for the second straight league game ? and the third time this season ? in a 4-1 loss against the Dynamo.

Goals coming in bunches for new-look DC

WASHINGTON ? Scoring goals simply doesn?t seem to be as big of a problem anymore for the new-look D.C. United.

Thanks in part to five goals from league-leader Charlie Davies, United have scored nine goals through six games, almost half what they managed in all of 2010.

One of the biggest keys has been the introduction of new faces into the mix, and the club has impressed in brief stretches in the attack by their ability to possess and pass the ball.

D.C. United return to action on the road against the Houston Dynamo on Friday (8:30 pm ET, Fox Soccer).

DC United prepared for taxing schedule ahead

WASHINGTON ? After a slow and steady start to the 2011 season, it?s all hands on deck for D.C. United over the next two weeks.

Starting Tuesday with a US Open Cup play-in game against New England, DC have four games in 13 days, and will look to manage minutes to keep players healthy and get the maximum results possible.

Head Coach Ben Olsen stressed that closely managing time isn?t just being done because of the busy two-week schedule.

USOC: Olsen, DC set for "guessing game" vs. Revs

WASHINGTON ? D.C. United are unsure of what type of opponent they'll face in Tuesday night?s US Open Cup play-in clash with the New England Revolution. Scouting for such games is always tricky.

Different coaches prepare for play-in matches in different ways, so it?s hard to know whether the Revolution will send out a team of reserves or starters ? or a mixture of the two.

?It?s a little different [than regular season games] in the sense that you can?t prepare too much,? head coach Ben Olsen said. ?You can?t really cut up film because it?s a guessing game.?

Failure to control Henry leads to DC downfall

WASHINGTON ? Despite Thierry Henry?s slow start to his 2011 MLS season, Ben Olsen and the D.C. United coaching staff knew that containing the striker was vital to succeed against New York on Thursday evening.

Pitted against central defenders Dejan Jakovic and Perry Kitchen, Henry had to be contained in order to get something out of this game. However, things went off the rails early, and the Red Bulls striker?s two goals were the catalyst in a 4-0 humbling loss on home soil.

The Atlantic Cup rivals renew acquaintances once again as D.C. United play host to the New York Red Bulls on ESPN2. Three For Thursday: Players for both NY and DC

Major League Soccer got it right with D.C. United and New York. Other rivalries have come and gone and there?s more than a little dust getting kicked up in the Rockies and in the Pacific Northwest, but there?s still no feud with more fire than the old-school throwdown between the Nation's Capital and the Big Apple in the Atlantic Cup, which resumes Thursday (8 pm, ESPN2/Deportes).

Oh, wait. The two sides can?t even agree on what to call this rivalry, let alone how to somehow keep it civil on the field and in the stands. Go figure.

La Super Copa VI Semifinals set

While most individuals in Washington, D.C. sought shelter from the storm that pounded the area on Saturday, April 16, eight of the top adult teams in the region braved the tempest and produced some of the most exciting La Super Copa action to date, as the field was whittled down to four.

D.C. Academy heads to Dallas Cup

WASHINGTON ? Instead of getting to relax and rest on their spring break over the next two weeks, two D.C. United Academy teams are heading south to test themselves against some of the best youth clubs around at the 2011 Dallas Cup.

This time of year is usually a two-week break for D.C.?s Academy, but this year the coaching staff decided otherwise in an attempt to bring the team together.

Toronto victory proves D.C. are no road pushovers

Just five games into the 2011 season and D.C. United have already scored more than half as many goals as they did away from home last year.

It?s a tribute to D.C.?s new approach to road matches in their first full season under manager Ben Olsen. Two goals in the first 10 minutes from Chris Pontius and Charlie Davies gave United its first road win of the year, on a field that has traditionally proven to be unwelcoming to visitors ? Toronto FC?s BMO Field.

DC's Quaranta giving back with new youth club

WASHINGTON ? The urge to give back to the game that has given so much to D.C. United midfielder Santino Quaranta recently began to creep into his life, and he knew he had to do something about it.

The MLS veteran did just that, working with old friend, Baltimore native and former pro Sean Rush, who with Quaranta founded the Pipeline Soccer Club to help Baltimore-area kids make a connection to the sport that helped shape Quaranta?a life.

WASHINGTON ? Even though the season is only a few weeks old, a variety of factors have already hampered Ben Olsen?s selection across D.C. United?s back line.

Injuries, international callups and suspensions have forced the need to juggle his starting defenders. Olsen has used four different combinations in all four of his matches.

MLS Power Rankings: Week 4

Just who managed to avoid the buzzsaw of yellow and red cards might have meant something in the win column this week, but that's not all that went into this week's rankings. We also saw the return (was he ever gone?) of David Ferreira and a cathartic first win for the Sounders, both of whom took some huge steps up the ladder. Got an issue? Vote for your own!

United looking to grind out road points at Toronto

WASHINGTON ? It?s too early in the season to toss around the phrase ?must-win? ahead of D.C. United?s trip to Toronto (Saturday, 7 pm ET, Fox Soccer in US, GOLTV in Canada). But as the team acknowledged this week, getting results away from RFK is becoming more of a necessity.

?We need to figure out how to get points, especially on the road,? assistant coach Chad Ashton said. ?It?s early, but we do look at it as a very important game.?

Rookie Rundown: Bruin scores first MLS goal

The Will Bruin era opened in earnest on Sunday night in Houston as the Dynamo rookie scored his first MLS goal to cap the hosts? cathartic 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps at Robertson Stadium.

Bruin, who was drafted 11th overall during the MLS SuperDraft after Houston manager Dominic Kinnear traded up to land the imposing forward out of Indiana University, finished off a breakaway chance in the 76th minute after streaking past the Whitecaps back line and skirting Vancouver goalkeeper Jay Nolly.

DC make history as 3 Home Growns see action

WASHINGTON ? When Andy Najar entered the game for D.C. United in Saturday?s 1-1 draw against the LA Galaxy, it marked the first time in league history that three Home Grown players were on the field at the same time for the same team.

Najar lined up alongside goalkeeper Bill Hamid and rookie defender Ethan White against the Galaxy. At one point, the trio played for D.C. United's academy team before signing professional contracts at one point or another over the last two years.

Longtime midfielder Santino Quaranta noted the occasion after the game.
