"We're going to have our hands full with four quarters of Michael Vick," Packers linebacker Clay Mathews said Sunday, in the wake of the victory over Chicago that put his team in the playoffs. "But we're looking forward to it."
Back on Sept. 12, the first Sunday of the regular season, the Packers rolled into Philly looking like the monsters they were predicted to be. Ryan Grant picked up 43 yards on his first eight carries. Aaron Rodgers threw a couple of touchdown passes. The defense knocked Kolb, who'd taken over the Eagles' starting QB job for the traded Donovan McNabb, out of the game with concussion. Green Bay led 20-3 when John Kuhn plunged in for a touchdown midway through the third quarter, and the guy playing QB for the Eagles hadn't seen any meaningful action at the position in three years.
What nobody knew at the time was that Grant's eight carries were the only eight he would get all year, as he was injured in the game and missed the remainder of the season. What nobody knew at the time was that the guy playing quarterback for the Eagles all of a sudden was Michael Vick 2.0, who would lead the team back within a touchdown with 175 passing yards and 103 rushing yards, then a few weeks later take over the starting job from Kolb and emerge as a league MVP candidate.
