The San Diego Padres don't have a lot of of money to throw around in free agency, which means they've got to be smart about the risks they take when spending their cash. They appear to be on the verge of making the right kind of investment in reliever Chad Qualls. Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the team and Qualls are close to signing off on a one-year deal worth $2 million. There would be a club option for a second season as well.
How does a deal for a pitcher who posted a brutal 7.32 ERA while splitting time between the Diamondbacks and Rays represent a smart move? There are a couple of reasons, but we'll start with the fact that Qualls' opposition had a batting average on balls in play of .399 last season. That's unusually high for any pitcher and well above anything Qualls had done in his previous six big-league seasons. History says that's likely to come down and bring his ERA down along with it.
