Canada, Russia Have History as World Juniors Final Approaches

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Somehow it seems right that Canada will play Russia for the gold medal at the 2011 World Junior Championship on Wednesday.

Canada and Russia have a rich and storied hockey history that has been passed from generation to generation much like a family heirloom. It's a rivalry that's spanned more than a half-century and with apologies to the United States, it's a rivalry that's not about to be replaced.

Every television highlight package about Canada on the international hockey includes Russia or the former Soviet Union.

Many many Canadians can pinpoint where they were when Paul Henderson beat Vladislav Tretiak on a low shot from the lip of the crease in Game 8 of the '72 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union. The goal gave Canada a 4-3-1 margin in the eight-game series.
