AEG Eyes NFL With Renderings for Proposed Los Angeles Stadium

LOS ANGELES -- It's a stadium for a team that doesn't exist. There's also a fuzzy construction timeline and a $1 billion budget that's really $1.35 billion.

But putting those major question marks -- and a few others -- aside for a moment, there was plenty of optimistic talk on Monday night about pro football's future in Los Angeles, as AEG revealed renderings for a proposed "events center" in downtown L.A. that it hopes to complete by the start of the 2015 NFL season. (One of the renderings is pictured at right).

AEG, the sprawling sports and entertainment company owned by Denver billionaire Phillip Anschutz, displayed images from three architecture firms that are finalists to design the privately-financed, 78,000-seat venue, which would replace part of the existing Los Angeles Convention Center and would be utilized as both a stadium and a massive exhibition hall.

The unveiling of the stadium drawings is the latest step by AEG, which owns the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy as well as a stake in the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, in its effort to bring pro football back to Los Angeles. It's now been 15 years since the Rams and the Raiders relocated to St. Louis and Oakland, respectively, leaving the country's No. 2 market without an NFL franchise.
