Sanders, a two-time Pro Bowl selection who was critical to the team's Super Bowl XLI victory following the 2006 season, was released by the Colts on Friday, Colts owner and chief executive officer Jim Irsay announced Friday.
"We have released Bob Sanders today," Irsay said in a statement. "We thank Bob for all his incredible contributions, from his Super Bowl interception to his Defensive Player-of-the-Year honor."
Sanders, who was hampered by injuries throughout his seven seasons with the Colts, missed 12 games in 2006, then returned for the postseason, which the Colts capped with a 29-17 victory over the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.
Sanders forced a fumble against the Bears, and also had an interception that helped secure the team's first Super Bowl title since the 1970 season.
Sanders, a second-round selection in the 2004 NFL draft, started just 46 regular-season games in seven seasons, and played in just 48.
But when he played, he was one of the most dynamic, game-changing defensive players in the NFL. He finished his Colts career with 373 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 13 passes defensed, three fumbles recovered, two fumbles forced and six interceptions.
