Mike Tolbert Placed on IR With Neck, Shoulder Injuries

Running back Mike Tolbert was placed on injured reserve Friday by the Chargers and will miss the team's season finale Sunday at Denver.

Tolbert, one of three Chargers players going on injured reserve this week, suffered a neck sprain and shoulder injury when he took a hard hit in last Sunday's loss at Cincinnati.

Jimmie Johnson Taking Time to Savor Fifth Championship in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- In a luxury suite in the Bellagio Hotel high above the Las Vegas strip, Jimmie Johnson was all smiles and "aw shucks" on the eve of collecting an unprecedented fifth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship trophy. He was at the hotel to meet with a small group of reporters and to unveil the true benchmark of an athlete's success.

Forget the historic five NASCAR titles, Johnson now has a video game named after him: "Jimmie Johnson's Anything With an Engine."

The game doesn't go on sale until 2011, but the concept launch this week meant the vivid collision between two of America's favorite pastimes, video gaming and NASCAR. And it was interesting to observe the hip, young gaming reporters, dressed in black adorned with lots of zippers and skull designs and colorful tattoos, sizing up the NASCAR All-American good guy's entry into their eclectic world.

"So how does it feel to be a legend?'' asked Jon Carnage, a former professional wrestler who is now a reporter from the video game blog Destructoid. He clearly caught the humble Johnson off guard.

"It's still strange to me that I hear that,'' Johnson replied.

Perhaps he should get used to it.

Billy Horschel Doing It All Over Again at Q School

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- A year ago after the final stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School, Billy Horschel, fresh from an All-America career at the University of Florida, was being mentioned in the same breath as another arriving college star, Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler.

Horschel, just like Fowler, brought game and gaudy amateur credentials to their first qualifying tournament and breezed through, earning projections for future success.

Now, a year later, Fowler, after collecting seven top 10s and playing on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, was just named 2010 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. Horschel, meanwhile, is back at qualifying, trying to do it all over again.

By all indications, he will. Heading into Monday's final day at Orange Country National, where the top 25 finishes (and ties) earn exempt status for next season, Horschel is 11 under and tied for ninth place. After Sunday's round of 70 he is five shots back of co-leaders Billy Mayfair and Ben Martin.

Royals Sign Zach Miner to Minors Deal

The Royals, as you may have heard, could use a bit of rotation help heading into 2011, and they're taking a buy-low shot at a pitcher who could provide some help.

Kansas City on Friday signed Zach Miner to a minor league deal, hoping the former Tigers right-hander can contribute next season after missing all of 2010 with an elbow injury.

Miner, 28, has a 25-20 record and 4.24 ERA in 157 major league games, 35 of them starts. He held down a hybrid role for the Tigers from 2006-09, working mostly out of the bullpen the last three years while also starting as needed.

He began experiencing elbow problems in spring training in 2010 and tried to treat it through rehab but ultimately had to undergo Tommy John surgery in late May. Based on the usual timetable, he could be ready to pitch at some point next spring training.

Pickin' on the Big Ten: Bowl Picks Part 2

With five games on New Year's Day and one in the week leading up to the BCS Championship Game, the Big Ten has only begun to fight. I previewed the TicketCity and Gator Bowls in Part 1 of my bowl picks, but here are my picks for the rest of the Big Ten's 2011 bowl games.

Capital One Bowl: Alabama vs. Michigan State

The intrigue here is that Nick Saban used to coach at Michigan State but fled for LSU the minute that job was offered to him. It would be a great "how ya like me now?" moment if Sparty could put it to the man who left for greener, warmer pastures, but do the Spartans have such a game in them?
